CAMBODIA

Right now I am in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We have been here for two days and I can't get enough of this place. Cambodia had exceeded all expectations that I had, especially Siem Reap. The Cambodian people are the kindest people I've ever met. The food is amazing. They have the best BBQ chicken and banana pancakes, who knew? This city is where the ancient temples of Angkor Wat reside. These are the temples from the jungle book and tomb raider. Every person here knows who Angelina Jolie is and always asks if we know her. These temples are incredible and so peaceful. Today we sat in the temple courtyard next to a pond with floating lily pads, feeding monkey, and listened to the monks sing. Nothing has ever been more content. It was one of those moments when you think to yourself, "I can't believe this is real."

Not only do I love this place because of the temples and good people, but also for the vibrant night life. The whole town turns into a night market after dark. Twinkling lights light up everywhere. Culture fills every corner of the streets. All of the restaurants have outdoor seating, all the shops open, everything is beautiful. This is a town I wish was closer cause I would want to come here frequently. This is a place I definitely want to come back to. I want to come back here with my dad especially. I know that he would love it and appreciate this place as much as I do. I really just want to travel the world with my dad. Everywhere I go I just think "my dad would love this!"

As amazing as this place is, it's still a third world country and incredibly poor. The kids here are what gets to me. They are the cutest kids I've ever been around. They have nothing but are still so happy and love their country. I just want to bring every single one home with me. Traveling to any country besides the US always makes me so grateful for life I've been given. It's unreal how many people take what they have for granted, me included. Downtown Phoenix is like Beverly Hills to these people.

I keep remembering that I am in Cambodia. Some of my impossible dreams are coming true. I never imagined that such an incredible opportunity would fall on my lap. That I would be backpacking through Asia. I feel so lucky and I am so excited that I still have over a week left in this continent.

  6. Wow Haleigh! You are living a dream of mine. I just finished a GREAT book called 'Out of the Killing Fields Into the Light" by Penne D. Conrad. The book is filled with personal stories from Cambodian church members who now live in Long Beach, CA. Their stories tell of the horrific events they lived through when the Khmer Rouge regime took over and then details how they escaped and then eventually converted to the church. It is very inspiring. There is also a great follow-up story in the new National Geographic issue on the countries progress in clearing up the mine fields. The Cambodian people have been through many horrific hardships. Give the kids hugs for me too! Be safe!
